Want to know more about electric vehicle charging?

As a relatively new product to most of us, there's still so much to learn about electric vehicles, from batteries to home charge points and the process of getting one fitted, we've got you covered.

How much does it cost to run an electric car?

Worried about the cost of electric vehicles? Whilst the initial purchase cost is high, we'll help you understand how much cheaper they are to run than petrol and diesel vehicles and how far you could get with a fully charged battery.

EV Servicing and maintainance

With no clutch, regenerative braking systems and far fewer fluids, how do you maintain a car with no combustion engine? Find out where you can get an EV serviced, how much it could costs and much more on our EV maintenance page.

Electric charge point home installation

We've taken the hassle out of getting a charge point at home by including standard installation with all our home EV chargers. Read all about the process from booking your appointment to plugging in for your first charge.

I switched to an electric car because they're more fun to drive, and I wanted to do something to help tackle climate change. You don't need to worry about queuing up to buy petrol, either – you can just plug in at home or at work and charge up your car's battery.

I rent my home, can I still have a charge point installed?

You'll need to seek your landlord’s permission before having an EV charge point installed.

For Renters and Landlords

You may be eligible for the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EHVS).

The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) are giving grants of £350 to those eligible, towards the cost of installing an EV charger at their property.

To qualify for the grant, you need to rent your property, or be the landlord of the property where you'd like the charger installed. You'll also need to have off-street parking.

For more information please visit  OZEV to find out more.

Do I need to be an E.ON energy customer to have a home charger installed?

No, you can use any UK energy supplier you wish.

If you'd like to get a quote from us for your energy, or you'd like to check out any updates on our EV tariff, you can visit our EV page at E.ON Next.

What if I have any questions once my charge point is installed?

If you have any further questions, please call us on 0333 202 4417 and we would be happy to help. If you need to report an emergency, give us a call on that number.. We're available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Standard call rates apply.

What type of connector do I need to charge on the E.ON network?

You'll need to use a "Type 2" connector to use our chargers. You'll also need to provide your own cable for socketed home and workplace units. Tethered units for homes will soon be available, but most public chargers have cables already.

If you don't have cable you can contact your car manufacturer or dealer to find a cable suitable for your vehicle.

What's standard installation for EV charge points?

Standard installation includes installation of your selected charge point on a brick or plaster wall connected to your property, a maximum run of 10m of cable from the wall-mounted position to your consumer unit (fuse box), with no civil or remedial electrical work needed.

The cable to the charge point will be neatly clipped flush to the wall or in conduit. A dedicated earthing spike will also be installed.

How much does it cost to charge on the E.ON Drive network?

If you're using the E.ON Drive app, the cost for that charge point will be displayed in pence per kilowatt hour (kWh) next to the location.

If you're using pay and go via the internet, you'll see the price displayed before entering payment details.

Does my charger default to off peak charging?

In line with current regulation your EV charger will default to operate within the following times:

  • 22:00 – 08:00
  • 11:00 – 16:00

When charging outside of the schedule your charger will blink green/blue for 5 minutes to signify awaiting schedule start.

This can be overridden by tapping your RFID card on the location indicated on the front of your charger.

To confirm, when  starting a charge either in or out of a charging schedule:

  • A randomised delay to the start of the charging will take place and can be for  up to 10 minutes.
  • This is signified by a green blinking light until the charging starts.
  • This delay can be overridden by a double tap of your RFID card on the location indicated on the front of your charger.
